Get Relief from TMJ with Our Experienced & Caring Orthodontist
Did you know that more than 60% of the U.S. population suffers from some facial or neck discomfort or persistent headaches, often due to Temporomandibular Joint Disorder or TMJ? If you are seeking TMJ treatment in Kennett Square, PA, Dr. Tamburrino can help recognize and figure out the source of the discomfort, and then tailor your treatment to give you the best chance for a good outcome! Relieving facial pain issues involves taking the time to talk to patients and getting a good sense of understanding of how a customized plan can help. Dr. Tamburrino believes there is no “cure-all” solution that works for everyone.
What Is TMJ?
TMJ develops when uneven stress or strain puts excessive pressure on the joints of your jaw, causing your muscles and joints to become irritated and inflamed. The teeth on your upper and lower jaws typically work in pairs, so when you chew or bite down, the pressure on your joints should be distributed evenly. TMJ can occur when this pressure becomes uneven, for example, if crooked or missing teeth cause you to have an uneven bite balance. Chronic tooth grinding (bruxism) can also cause or contribute to TMJ.
What Are the Symptoms of TMJ?
As your jaw joints become more inflamed and irritated, you may develop persistent jaw pain and chronic headaches. You could also experience clicking or “popping” noises when you chew, as well as muscle spasms, facial or neck pain, and hearing difficulties such as ringing sensations or “stuffiness” in your ears. Sometimes, your jaw can temporarily “lock” in an open position after you’ve yawned or opened your mouth very wide. TMJ rarely resolves on its own, and unless it gets properly treated, its symptoms can grow much more severe over time.
There are many treatment options for getting help with TMJ. Some combat the pain with pain killers, while others rely on nerve stimulation therapy. However, there is another option that also improves your dental health and self-confidence, and that is through the use of orthodontic treatment. Sometimes, the problems you are having can be related to how your teeth work together. With orthodontic treatment, Dr. Tamburrino is able to align your bite, as well as how your jaw aligns when it is opening and closing. Dr. Tamburrino is devoted to understanding jaw function and helping our patients become pain-free in the most conservative way possible. He is equally committed to helping you understand why you are feeling discomfort, what options are available to help, and offering a realistic outcome.
